SUMMARY:The Holy Innocents
DESCRIPTION:28 December\; 29 December in the Byzantine calendar\n\nKept w
ithin the octave of Christmas\, this feast commemorates the children of
Bethlehem killed by Herod in his attempt on the infant Christ\, counted
by the church as the first martyrs\, martyrs in deed though not by choic
 e. Its mood is deliberately discordant with the surrounding festivity. I
n medieval Europe it was the day of the boy bishop and of licensed inver
sion\, when the least were briefly set highest.\n\nhttps://military.inte
