Ancient Egyptian Army

Ancient

The army of ancient Egypt evolved from localized militia forces in the Old Kingdom into a professional standing military by the New Kingdom period, roughly 1550 to 1070 BC, built around massed infantry armed with spears, axes and composite bows, supported from around the seventeenth century BC onward by two-man horse-drawn war chariots adopted after contact with the Hyksos. Pharaohs including Thutmose III and Ramesses II led campaigns deep into the Levant and Nubia, and the Egyptian military's organization into named divisions, each associated with a major deity such as Amun, Ra, Ptah and Set, is documented in inscriptions describing the Battle of Kadesh around 1274 BC against the Hittite Empire, one of the largest chariot battles in recorded history. Egyptian military architecture, including fortified strongholds along the Nubian frontier and the eastern Nile Delta, reflects a sophisticated logistical and defensive system sustained over many centuries. The Egyptian army's chariot corps and archery units remained central to its military identity through the New Kingdom's imperial height, gradually declining in relative power as Egypt faced increasing pressure from Sea Peoples, Libyans and later Assyrian and Persian incursions in the first millennium BC.
