Alexander of Macedon carried out a sustained series of conquests and military campaigns from 336 to 323 BC, opening with the conquest of the Achaemenid Persian Empire under Darius III and continuing east into Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent. The decisive victories at Issus and Gaugamela broke Achaemenid power; the campaign extended Macedonian rule from Greece to the Indus Valley before ending with Alexander's death in 323 BC.
