First Anglo-Maratha War

Modern

The First Anglo-Maratha War was fought from 1775 to 1782 between the British East India Company and the Maratha Confederacy, triggered when the Company backed a rival claimant, Raghunath Rao, in a succession dispute for the office of Peshwa against the young Madhavrao II and his regent Nana Phadnavis. Company forces suffered a heavy defeat at the Battle of Wadgaon in 1779, forcing a humiliating convention, before a stronger relief force under Warren Hastings reversed the Company's fortunes in subsequent campaigning. The war ended with the Treaty of Salbai in 1782, which restored most of the territory taken during the fighting and left the Maratha Confederacy the dominant power in India for another generation, while the Company gained a measure of peace on its western frontier.
