The Teutonic Knights, formally the Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Jerusalem, were founded around 1190 during the Third Crusade as a German military religious order combining hospital care for pilgrims with armed defense of Christian territory in the Holy Land, before shifting their primary military focus, from the early thirteenth century onward, to the Baltic region of northern Europe. Invited by Polish duke Konrad of Masovia to campaign against the pagan Old Prussians, the order conquered and Christianized Prussia through a decades-long military campaign, establishing an independent monastic state governed directly by the order's Grand Master, and subsequently extended crusading campaigns against pagan Lithuania and Orthodox Russian principalities, including a notable defeat at the 1242 Battle on the Ice against Novgorod under Alexander Nevsky. The Teutonic Knights' military power, built on heavily armored knightly cavalry and a network of formidable brick castles such as Malbork, peaked in the fourteenth century before a decisive defeat by combined Polish-Lithuanian forces at the Battle of Grunwald in 1410 marked the beginning of the order's long territorial and military decline. The order's Prussian state was ultimately secularized in 1525, becoming the Duchy of Prussia, a political entity whose later evolution proved foundational to the eventual rise of the Kingdom of Prussia.
