The First Mongol Invasion of Burma was fought from 1277 to 1287 between the Yuan dynasty of Kublai Khan and the Pagan Empire of King Narathihapate, beginning after Pagan repeatedly refused Mongol demands for tribute first made in the early 1270s. Initial fighting broke out at the Battle of Ngasaunggyan in 1277, and a renewed Mongol campaign in the 1280s captured the towns of Tagaung and Hanlin in northern Burma before a final push toward the Pagan capital in 1287, following Narathihapate's assassination by his own son. The campaign brought down the two-hundred-fifty-year-old Pagan Empire, and Mongol forces organized the conquered northern territory into a new administrative province. Pagan's collapse ushered in more than two centuries of political fragmentation across Burma and helped clear the way for the rise of new Tai-Shan states in the region.
