The Type 61 is a main battle tank developed and used by the Japan Ground Self Defense Force, built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Development began in 1955 as part of postwar Japanese remilitarization, and the tank entered service in April 1961, with about 560 built between 1961 and 1975. It was eventually succeeded by the Type 74 tank and remained in Japanese service until the year 2000.
