The BTR-40 is a Soviet open topped, wheeled armoured personnel carrier and reconnaissance vehicle built on the GAZ-63 truck chassis by the Gorky Automobile Plant, designed by V. A. Dedkov between 1947 and 1950 and entering service in 1950. Its self bearing body design was a novel construction method for a Soviet vehicle of the time, and it could carry up to eight soldiers with an optional machine gun mount, though it offered little protection against modern weapons. It was eventually replaced in the armoured personnel carrier role by the BTR-152 and as a scout car by the BRDM-1.
