BTR-70

The BTR-70 is a Soviet eight-wheeled armored personnel carrier accepted into service on 21 August 1972 as a successor to the BTR-60PB, adding twin petrol engines and an internal layout influenced by the BMP-1. It first saw combat during the Soviet-Afghan War, where design shortcomings became apparent, leading the Soviet military to replace it with the diesel powered BTR-80 from 1984. Relatively few BTR-70s were built for Soviet forces, but the design was widely exported and license-built in Romania as the TAB-77, with further variants later developed by other nations.
