R-1 tank

The R-1 was a Romanian-used tank that saw action during the Second World War with the mechanized Romanian cavalry. It was a modified version of the AH-IV, a Czechoslovak-designed export vehicle, and could be classified as either a light tank or a tankette depending on the source. Thirty-six were used, thirty-five built in Czechoslovakia and one modified example built in Romania under license. It weighed 3.9 tons, mounted a 7.92mm ZB vz. 35 heavy machine gun in its turret plus a secondary machine gun, and was powered by a 55 to 60 horsepower engine giving a top speed of 45 kilometers per hour on road and 20 kilometers per hour off road, with a crew of two. Superior to similar vehicles when introduced in the 1930s, the R-1 had become obsolete by the start of the Second World War.
