The Panther is a German medium tank introduced in 1943, designed to counter the Soviet T-34 and intended to replace the Panzer III and Panzer IV, though it ultimately served alongside them for the rest of the war. It combined strong firepower, protection and mobility, with gun penetration exceeding that of the heavier Tiger I, though at 44.8 metric tons its side armor remained a weakness. About 6,000 Panthers were built between 1943 and 1945, making it the third most produced German armored fighting vehicle of the Second World War, and it fought extensively on both the Eastern and Western Fronts.
