The BMD-1 is a Soviet airborne amphibious tracked infantry fighting vehicle, introduced in 1969 and first observed by Western militaries in 1970. Its name stands for Boyevaya Mashina Desanta. The BMD-1 can be dropped by parachute, and although similar in shape to the BMP-1 it is smaller, at just over half the weight. It was used as an infantry fighting vehicle by the Soviet Airborne Forces, known as the VDV. An improved variant, the BMD-2, was later developed, and the BMD-1 also provided the basis for the BTR-D airborne multi purpose tracked armoured personnel carrier.
