The Leclerc is a French third-generation main battle tank built by the state-linked manufacturer now known as KNDS France, developed from the 1980s after a joint tank program with West Germany broke down over design disagreements, and it entered French Army service in 1992 as the replacement for the older AMX-30. It is named in honor of Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque, a Free French Forces commander of the Second World War, and it carries a 120mm smoothbore gun paired with a 1,100 kilowatt SACM diesel engine, at a combat weight of roughly 55 to 58 tonnes depending on production series. Around 862 were built between 1990 and 2008, and beyond French service the tank equips the United Arab Emirates and Jordan, having taken part in peacekeeping deployments in Kosovo and Lebanon and combat service with the UAE in the Yemeni civil war since 2015.
