The Congreve rocket was a military rocket developed by the British inventor Sir William Congreve, who began experimenting with rockets in 1804 and by 1806 had built an iron-cased design reaching 3,000 yards, far beyond the range of earlier European rockets. Fielded by British forces from 1808, it was later adopted by Russia, Austria and other powers through the Crimean War.
