The Katyusha was a Soviet-developed multiple rocket launcher, mounted on truck chassis and capable of firing a rapid salvo of unguided rockets from parallel rail launchers, first used in combat in 1941 during the early stages of the Eastern Front of World War II and named informally by Soviet troops after a popular wartime song. The system's ability to saturate an area target with a dense barrage of explosive rockets in a matter of seconds, followed by rapid displacement before enemy artillery could return fire, gave Soviet forces a powerful and mobile area-suppression weapon that German troops came to dread, nicknaming it "Stalin's Organ" for the launcher's rows of rocket rails resembling organ pipes. Cheap to produce compared to conventional artillery pieces and requiring less precision engineering, the Katyusha was manufactured in large numbers throughout the war and became a signature weapon of the Red Army's offensives from Stalingrad onward. The type's basic design principle, mass unguided rocket saturation fire from a mobile platform, directly influenced numerous later multiple rocket launcher systems fielded by militaries worldwide through the Cold War and into the present.
