Battle of Actium

The Battle of Actium was a naval battle fought on 2 September 31 BC in the Ionian Sea near Actium, Greece, between the fleet of Octavian, commanded by Marcus Agrippa, and the combined fleet of Mark Antony and Cleopatra. Octavian's victory ended over a decade of rivalry with Antony and let him consolidate power over Rome, a turning point historians view as marking the end of the Roman Republic and the start of the Roman Empire.
