Fought on 5 November 333 BC on a narrow coastal plain near Issus in southern Anatolia, the Battle of Issus was Alexander the Great's second major engagement against the Persian army and his first direct confrontation with Darius III. Alexander exploited the cramped terrain to negate the Persian numerical advantage, and Darius fled, abandoning his family, treasury and camp. The victory secured southern Asia Minor for Macedon.
