Battle of Iwo Jima

The Battle of Iwo Jima was a five-week Pacific War battle from 19 February to 26 March 1945 in which United States Marine Corps, Navy and Army forces landed on and captured Iwo Jima from the Imperial Japanese Army, in an operation designated Operation Detachment aimed at capturing the island's two airfields. Total American casualties exceeded Japanese casualties, unique among Pacific War amphibious landings, and the battle ended in an American victory.
