Battle of Plassey

The Battle of Plassey was fought on 23 June 1757 between the British East India Company, under Robert Clive, and the Nawab of Bengal and his French allies. The Company's decisive victory was made possible by the defection of Mir Jafar, the Nawab's commander in chief, and it gave the East India Company de facto control of Bengal, beginning a period of British Company rule in India that expanded over the following century.
