Battle of Lepanto

Early Modern

The Battle of Lepanto was a naval battle fought on 7 October 1571 in the Gulf of Patras, in which a fleet of the Holy League, a coalition of Catholic states led by the Spanish Empire and the Republic of Venice, decisively defeated the Ottoman Empire's fleet. Involving more than 450 warships, it was the largest naval battle in Western history since classical antiquity and the last major engagement fought almost entirely between rowing galleys, ending in a Holy League victory that nearly destroyed the Ottoman fleet.
