Battle of Talas

The Battle of Talas was fought in July 751 at the Talas River between the Abbasid Caliphate, allied with the Tibetan Empire, and the Tang dynasty and its allies, over control of the region around the Syr Darya in Central Asia. The Abbasid army under Ziyad ibn Salih, aided by Karluk forces, defeated the Tang army commanded by Gao Xianzhi; Chinese sources record 20,000 to 30,000 Tang soldiers killed, and the defeat ended Tang influence in Transoxiana and halted further Tang westward expansion.
