The Battle of Badr was fought on 13 March 624 CE near the present-day city of Badr in Medina Province, Saudi Arabia, when Muhammad, commanding an army of his followers, defeated a Quraysh army led by Amr ibn Hisham. The battle followed several failed Muslim attempts to intercept Meccan trade caravans and marked the start of a six-year war between Muhammad and his own tribe; sources record about 14 killed on the Muslim side against roughly 70 killed and 70 taken prisoner among the Quraysh.
