The Battle of Boyacá, fought on 7 August 1819, was a decisive victory by a combined army of Venezuelan and New Granadan troops with a British Legion, led by General Simón Bolívar, over a division of the Spanish army under Colonel José Barreiro. The victory secured Bolívar's campaign to liberate New Granada and is considered the opening battle of the independence of northern South America, leading directly to further patriot victories at Carabobo, Pichincha, Junín and Ayacucho.
