Battle of Rorke's Drift

The Battle of Rorke's Drift was fought on 22-23 January 1879 in the Anglo-Zulu War, when a Zulu force that had broken off from the main army during the British defeat at Isandlwana attacked the British mission station and supply depot at Rorke's Drift. A vastly outnumbered British garrison under Lieutenants John Chard and Gonville Bromhead defended the post successfully; the action holds the record for the largest number of Victoria Crosses awarded for a single battle.
