The Battle of Verdun was fought from 21 February to 18 December 1916 on the Western Front in France, as the German 5th Army attacked the fortified region of Verdun defended by the French Second Army. The longest battle of the First World War, lasting some 302 days, it produced roughly 714,000 combined casualties and ended in a French victory.
