Battle of Ayacucho

The Battle of Ayacucho, fought on 9 December 1824, was the decisive military encounter of the Peruvian War of Independence, in which the patriot army under Antonio Jose de Sucre defeated the Spanish royalist forces of Viceroy Jose de la Serna. The victory secured the independence of Peru and, with it, the rest of belligerent South America, and is generally considered to mark the end of the Spanish American wars of independence, though royalist resistance continued for a time in Upper Peru.
