The Battle of Trafalgar was a naval fleet action fought on 21 October 1805 between the Royal Navy, led by Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, and a combined French and Spanish fleet under Vice-Admiral Pierre-Charles Villeneuve, off Cape Trafalgar during the War of the Third Coalition. Nelson's numerically inferior fleet of 27 ships of the line captured or destroyed 18 allied vessels without losing any of its own, though Nelson was fatally shot during the action, and the battle ended in a decisive British victory that cemented British naval dominance.
