The Gallipoli campaign was a First World War military operation on the Gallipoli Peninsula from 19 February 1915 to 9 January 1916, in which the Allied powers of Britain, France and Russia attempted to force the Ottoman Empire out of the war by controlling the Turkish straits. After a failed naval assault and an amphibious landing in April 1915, eight months of fighting produced about 250,000 casualties on each side before the Allies withdrew, and the campaign ended in an Ottoman victory.
