The fall of Singapore was the capture of Singapore from the British by the Empire of Japan, with fighting lasting from 8 to 15 February 1942 during the Second World War. Singapore had been Britain's foremost military base and economic port in South-East Asia, and its capture resulted in the largest surrender of British-led forces in history, with about 80,000 Commonwealth troops taken prisoner.
