Military Operations

Formally planned, code-named military operations carried out to achieve a specific objective: special-forces raids and precision strikes (Operation Neptune Spear), non-combat and peacetime undertakings such as evacuations, peacekeeping deployments and humanitarian relief missions (Operation Provide Comfort), and other named military undertakings identified primarily by their operational designation rather than by resolving to one discrete armed engagement. Belongs here: a formally named military operation as its own entity, whatever its scale or whether it involved direct combat. Does not belong here: a sustained armed conflict between states or parties as a whole, filed under Wars; a single battle or the extended sequence of battles making up a campaign, filed under Battles and Campaigns, even when that campaign itself carries an operational codename (an offensive already recorded there, such as the D-Day landings under Operation Overlord, is not duplicated here); and a standing force or unit, filed under Armed Forces and Units.
