Quintus Fabius Maximus

Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus was a Roman statesman and general of the third century BC, made dictator of the Roman Republic and given the task of defeating Hannibal in southern Italy during the Second Punic War. Rather than meet Hannibal in open battle after Rome's catastrophic defeats at Trebia and Lake Trasimene, he shadowed the Carthaginian army, harassed its foraging parties and denied it a decisive engagement, a war of attrition that earned him the cognomen Cunctator, the Delayer, and that later gave the Fabian strategy its name.
