Charles Martel (c. 688 - 22 October 741), whose sobriquet Martel means The Hammer in Old French, was a Frankish political and military leader who served as Duke and Prince of the Franks and Mayor of the Palace, ruling the Franks in all but name from 718 until his death. He is best known for his victory over an Umayyad army at the Battle of Tours in 732, credited as an important check on further Islamic expansion into western Europe, and as the founder of the Carolingian dynasty through his sons.
