Combined arms warfare is the doctrine of coordinating infantry, armored vehicles, artillery and air power as one synchronized system in which each arm compensates for the others' vulnerabilities, rather than committing them separately or sequentially. The approach matured in the closing years of the First World War, most visibly in the mass tank, infantry and artillery coordination the French and British armies developed by 1917 and 1918, and became the organizing principle behind most twentieth-century mechanized doctrines that followed, including deep operation and blitzkrieg, both already in this atlas.
