The M5 modular crowd control munition is a non-lethal, direct-fire device built for United States military and law enforcement use to disperse or deny an area to large groups of people, combining a flash-bang effect with the impact of roughly six hundred high-velocity rubber or plastic balls across a sixty- to eighty-degree arc out to about thirty meters. It is built like the lethal M18A1 Claymore mine, with a thin sheet of explosive between the projectiles and a foam backing, but is marked with a raised diamond pattern and light green color on its back plate to prevent confusion with an actual Claymore, and it can be used standalone, mounted on a vehicle, or fixed to a building or fence, including for standoff protection of sites such as embassies.
