The AEK-999 Barsuk is a Russian general-purpose machine gun chambered in 7.62x54mmR, developed at the Kovrov Mechanical Plant during the 1990s as a modernized version of the PKM and entering service in 2008. It is a gas-operated, open-bolt weapon weighing 8.74 kilograms with a 605mm barrel, a cyclic rate of about 650 rounds per minute, a muzzle velocity of 825 meters per second and an effective range of roughly 1,500 meters. It lost the Russian military trials it was developed for to the Pecheneg machine gun, which was built to the same requirement.
