The UKM-2000 is a 7.62x51mm NATO general-purpose machine gun designed and built by Zaklady Mechaniczne Tarnow in Tarnow, Poland, its name standing for Uniwersalny Karabin Maszynowy, or Universal Machine Gun. It was developed in 2000, the year after Poland joined NATO, to give Polish forces a machine gun compatible with standard NATO ammunition. Its design is based on the Soviet PKM machine gun, which Poland had previously built under license, but it was substantially reworked to fire the 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge from disintegrating metallic links rather than the PKM's closed-link belt.
