Zastava M72

The Zastava M72 is a light machine gun developed and manufactured by Zastava Arms of Yugoslavia, designed in 1972 and entering service in 1973 as a derivative of the Soviet RPK light machine gun chambered in 7.62x39mm. Compared with the RPK, the M72 omits the scope side-rail mount and carrying handle, adds a reinforced receiver and night sights, and uses a heavy-profile barrel with cooling fins for sustained fire, feeding from 30 or 40-round box magazines or a 75-round drum. The standard M72 has a fixed wooden stock, though later variants use a folding stock, and it weighs 5.5 kilograms with an overall length of 1,025 millimeters and a 542 millimeter barrel, firing at about 620 rounds per minute with a muzzle velocity of 745 meters per second and an effective range of 400 meters. It has remained in continuous production since 1973 and stays in service today.
