The M240 is the United States military's designation for the FN MAG, a family of belt fed, gas operated medium machine guns chambered for the 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge, originally designed in Belgium and currently manufactured for American use by U.S. Ordnance in Reno, Nevada and by FN America, the American subsidiary of FN Herstal. The U.S. armed forces have fielded it since the late 1970s, adopting it in 1977 as the Army's standard coaxial machine gun for tanks and armored vehicles.
