The Zeppelin was a type of rigid airship named for the German inventor Ferdinand von Zeppelin, and during World War I the German military made extensive use of Zeppelins as bombers and reconnaissance scouts. The Kaiser approved airship raids on Great Britain on 7 January 1915, the first raid struck Great Yarmouth and nearby areas on the night of 19 to 20 January 1915, and the bombing campaign killed more than 500 people over the course of the war.
