The AH-64 Apache is an American twin-turboshaft attack helicopter with a tandem two-seat cockpit, originally developed by Hughes Helicopters before passing to McDonnell Douglas and then Boeing, and it entered United States Army service in April 1986. It carries nose-mounted sensors for target acquisition and night operations, a 30mm M230 chain gun, and stub-wing pylons for AGM-114 Hellfire missiles and Hydra 70 rocket pods, along with roughly 2,500 pounds of armor protecting its redundant systems. The Apache first saw combat during the 1989 invasion of Panama and flew extensively during the 1991 Gulf War, and more than 2,700 have been delivered as of March 2024. It has become the primary attack helicopter of several allied air forces, including those of Greece, Japan, Israel, the Netherlands, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates.
