F-22 Raptor

Military Aircraft

The F-22 Raptor is an American single-seat, twin-engine fifth-generation stealth air-superiority fighter developed by Lockheed Martin with Boeing as principal subcontractor, entering United States Air Force service in December 2005 after a development and prototype competition that began in the 1980s. It combines low-observable stealth shaping, supercruise capability allowing sustained supersonic flight without afterburner, advanced integrated avionics and sensor fusion, and high maneuverability, and it is widely regarded as one of the most capable air-superiority fighters ever built. Production ended in 2011 after 187 operational aircraft were delivered, a total well below original plans, following a congressional decision to end the program amid its high unit cost and the absence of a like-for-like adversary threat at the time, and by law the F-22 has never been exported to any foreign country, unlike most other modern American fighter programs.
