The AAM-4 is a medium range active radar homing air to air missile developed in Japan, built primarily by Mitsubishi Electric with production by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. It entered service in September 1999 as Japan's own beyond visual range missile, replacing earlier imported designs, and can also be used in a surface to air role against aircraft and cruise missiles. The missile weighs about 222 kilograms and carries a high explosive blast fragmentation warhead, reaching speeds around Mach 4.5 with a stated range of about 85 kilometers. An upgraded AAM-4B variant introduced in 2010 added an active electronically scanned array radar seeker, described as the first of its kind fitted to an air to air missile.
