Astra (missile)

Astra is a beyond visual range air to air missile developed by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation and inducted into service in 2019. The Astra Mk-1 uses mid-course inertial guidance driven by a fiber-optic gyroscope with active radar homing for terminal guidance, can engage targets head-on at ranges up to 110 kilometers, weighs 154 kilograms and carries a 15 kilogram high-explosive warhead at speeds up to Mach 4.5, and is manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited. Later variants extend its reach considerably: the Mk-2 stretches range to 160 to 240 kilometers, while the Mk-3, known as Gandiva, adds air-breathing ramjet propulsion to reach up to 340 kilometers, letting it engage high-value aircraft at far greater distances than the original version.
