AS-30

Missiles And Guided Munitions

The AS-30 is a French air-to-ground missile built by Nord Aviation, intended for precision attacks on high-value targets such as bridges and bunkers. It was essentially a scaled-up version of the earlier AS-20 and at first reused that missile's manual command guidance, in which the pilot had to follow the weapon visually and steer it with a small joystick while also flying the aircraft, a method that proved difficult in practice. The later AS-30L variant replaced this with semi-active laser homing, so the missile can fly to its target without operator input. Around sixty AS-30L rounds were fired during Operation Desert Storm and Operation Deliberate Force. The source article describes the missile as entering service in 1960 and credits it with a range of roughly three to eleven kilometres.
