ADM-20 Quail

Missiles And Guided Munitions

The McDonnell ADM-20 Quail, originally designated GAM-72, was a subsonic, jet-powered, air-launched decoy cruise missile built by the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation for the United States Air Force's Boeing B-52 Stratofortress bomber. Carrying electronics and radar reflectors meant to make it indistinguishable from an approaching B-52 at low altitude, it was intended to force Soviet air defenses to divide their missiles and interceptors among multiple apparent targets, reducing the odds that any single bomber would actually be engaged. The Quail entered production in November 1957 and service in September 1960, and design work on an improved successor, begun in January 1968 under the Subsonic Cruise Aircraft Decoy program, eventually contributed to the development of the AGM-86 air-launched cruise missile.
