BGM-109G Gryphon

Missiles And Guided Munitions

The BGM-109G Gryphon was a ground-launched variant of the Tomahawk cruise missile, built by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force during the Cold War, reaching initial operating capability in 1983 and remaining in service until 1991. Unlike other Tomahawk variants, it carried only a W84 thermonuclear warhead with a variable yield of 0.2 to 150 kilotons, and it combined inertial guidance with terrain contour matching (TERCOM) to reach targets 2,780 kilometers away at a subsonic 880 kilometers per hour, flying a low, terrain-hugging profile powered by a Williams International turbofan engine with a solid-fuel booster. The missile was launched from mobile transporter-erector-launcher vehicles based at NATO airbases across Europe, and it was eliminated under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, with all units destroyed or converted to displays by 1991.
