The K745A1 Red Shark, known in Korean as Hong-sang-eo, is a South Korean vertically launched anti-submarine missile system that carries a K745 Blue Shark homing torpedo, deployed by parachute near a detected target after which the torpedo independently locates and engages it, giving the system a range of about 19 kilometers. It was jointly developed between 1999 and 2009 by the Korea University of Science and Technology, the Agency for Defense Development and the Republic of Korea Navy specifically to counter North Korean submarines, entering service in 2010 with LIG Defense & Aerospace as manufacturer. It arms Republic of Korea Navy KDX-II and KDX-III class destroyers, which carry between 8 and 16 missiles depending on the ship class.
