The Penguin is a Norwegian short to medium range anti-ship guided missile built by Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace with the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment, developed from the early 1960s with United States and West German financial support and entering series production in 1972. It was the first NATO anti-ship missile to use a passive infrared seeker rather than the more common active radar seeker, guiding itself by inertial navigation until its infrared terminal homing phase takes over. It can be launched from surface ships, helicopters and fighter aircraft, and its warhead is fitted with a delay fuze so it detonates inside the target ship.
