DF-21

The Dongfeng 21, known to NATO as the CSS-5, is a two-stage, solid-fuel, single-warhead medium-range ballistic missile developed by China's Changfeng Mechanics and Electronics Technology Academy as part of the Dongfeng missile family. Its development began in the late 1960s and was completed around 1985 to 1986, though it was not deployed until 1991. It was developed from the JL-1 submarine-launched missile and was the first solid-fuel land-based missile fielded by China. The United States Department of Defense estimated in 2008 that China had 60 to 80 missiles and 60 launchers, with approximately 10 to 11 missiles built annually.
