Agni-II

Missiles And Guided Munitions

The Agni-II is an Indian medium-range ballistic missile with a stated range of more than 2,000 kilometers. It is a two-stage, solid-fueled weapon about 20 meters long and 1 meter in diameter, with a launch weight near 17,000 kilograms and a single warhead of up to 1,000 kilograms that is likely nuclear. India's Defence Research and Development Organisation began developing it in July 1997 as an upgraded variant of the earlier Agni technology demonstrator, adding a solid-fueled upper stage and a new propellant. The first flight test was made on April 11, 1999 from a rail-mobile launcher, and a second followed on January 17, 2001 after limited production began. The armed forces inducted the missile around 2004, although technical problems delayed a true operational capability until 2011, and it now serves in Army units under the Strategic Forces Command. A 2010 flight test of an extended-range variant, later known as the Agni-IV, failed.
